Meet the National President

Erin Mongelli

Erin Mongelli joined the organization in 2015. She is an organizing member of the Illinois Bartlett Kelley Circle #135. She attended her first National Convention in 2016 and proceeded to hold her first National office in 2017. Erin then worked her way through the different National offices always trying to learn more about the organization, how to honor our ancestors, support our veterans, and educate the next generation. She has been appointed to a variety of committees including Membership, Ways and Means, and the Archival Committee. As part of the Archival Committee, she actively participated by transcribing and labeling scanned copies of memberships cards for Illinois and several other states.

Sister Erin has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Masters in Curriculum and Technology. She has been teaching for 25 years and currently holds several leadership and training positions at the school and district level. For the past 15 years she has led after school programs focusing on leadership, genealogy connected to the civil war, and robotics. Erin and her husband have 5 children, Jack, Kathryn, Kellyn, Kamryn, and Joseph, whom she adores dearly. She volunteers at her children’s schools and assists with their Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops. She is currently a Den Chief for a Cub Scout Troop and merit badge counselor for American Heritage, Genealogy, Journalism, Reading, Scholarship, and Sustainability. In her free time, she enjoys researching family history and traveling with her family to locations connected to her ancestors. Her research has not only led to the discovery of her Civil War Ancestors, but also direct lines to the War of 1812, the American Revolution, and the Mayflower.

Erin gained her membership in the LGAR through her great-great grandfather Philander W. Copeland who enlisted from Rockford, Illinois on the 27th of August 1861 as a Private of the 45th regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was honorably discharged January of 1864 and immediately reenlisted as a veteran with the rank of Principal Musician. Philander was an active member in the Byron L Carr Post #14 of Denver, Colorado. He participated in activities and parades until his 80s.

As National President, Erin Mongelli looks forward to connecting with Departments and Circles, learning firsthand from them about their activities and volunteer work. Together, she hopes we can learn how to promote patriotism, love of our Flag and of our Country while understanding the true principles of Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty.
