Our Flag

I close my eyes – yes, there they are –
Passing by, the soldiers of the G.A.R.,
Proudly carrying the Stars and Stripes in state,
Marching, graves of their comrades to decorate.
Seventy years have passed and those brave old men
Are still carrying Our Banner, a few of them,
For most of them rest from toil and strife,
From proudly marching with drum and fife.
There never was a day I didn’t thrill
At our beautiful flag, “Old Glory” still,
As it waived in the breeze at each parade,
Or on the Fourth of July it was displayed.
And still today, when I am old,
I love our flag, yes, I love each fold,
The Stars, the red, the blue and white,
And for what it stands, both freedom and right.
